2791 Private
Frederick E. Bellwood
10th Hussars
9th January 1916 Age 25

He died that we might live

Dorothy Hall and Brenda McMahon have submitted the following:-

Frederick Edmund born about 1891, was the son of John and Emma Bellwood of Heighington near Darlington. His father was a Joiner and Cartwright who appeared to be self employed as 1901 census records him working on ‘own account’.

Sometime before 1914 Frederick and other members of his family went to America as when he enlisted at Stockton-on-Tees he gives his residence as Colorado U.S.A.

Frederick joined the Prince of Wales Own Royal Hussars. He entered France 6/10/1914 which suggests he had some military experience before August 1914.

Frederick died 9 January 1916 at 10th Newcastle Northern General Hospital and is buried in Gateshead East Cemetery.

His younger brother Tom Octavius (born 1896) of 810 West Railwood, Flagstaff, Arizona added to Frederick’s headstone “He died that we might live”.

Frederick Bellwood is not on any North East Memorial.
