Menin Gate Memorial

On the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial is the name of 5165 Private James McClarence serving with the 1st Battalion, (5th Foot) Northumberland Fusiliers who died 16/06/1915.

James McClarence was born on the 13th October 1880 at Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He was the son of James McClarence.

James was educated at St. Dominic's School , Newcastle. He married at St Joseph's Church, Gateshead, on the 21st January 1905, Ellen, (30 Oakwellgate, Gateshead), daughter of George Storey. They had four children Charles Robert born 27th October 1905, James Edward born 20th May 1908, John Birrell born 28th October 1911 and Dominic born 14th April 1914.

James was employed in the Flour Mills at Newcastle.

He enlisted 25th August 1914, and was killed in action on the 16th June 1915 at Ypres.
