Tyne Cot Memorial

On the Tyne Cot Memorial is the name of Lieutenant Stanley Dawson Simm Tucker, serving with the 1/6th Northumberland Fusiliers who died 26/10/1917.

Stanley Dawson Simm Tucker was the younger son, born 18th December 1888 at 7 Gladstone Terrace, Gateshead, and baptised at Holy Trinity church 30th January 1889, of Thomas Tucker, [born 1849, Pipewellgate, Gateshead, died 7th January 1891], and Lucy Jane nee Simms, born 30th May 1851, at 4 Nuns Lane, Gateshead, baptised at St Mary's Church 23rd June 1851, died 1st March 1949, at 39 Beverley Terrace, Cullercoats, Tynemouth, [daughter of John Simms, born 29th October 1798, baptised 27th January 1799, at the Church of St Mary, Gateshead, died 31st January 1855, at 3 Nuns Lane, Gateshead), and Martha Nicholson, (born 15th August 1808 at Whickham, baptised 11th September 1808 at the Church of St Mary the Virgin Whickham, died 6th July 1892 at 4 Nuns Lane, Gateshead, who were married 24th November 1835, at the Church of St Andrew, Newcastle upon Tyne), who were married 5th March 1872 at the Holy Trinity Church, Gateshead.

The other children were:-

Martha Louise, born 2nd December 1872, at 18 Regent Terrace, Gateshead, baptised 25th December 1872 at the Holy Trinity Church, Gateshead, died 25th August 1920, at 15 Ellison Place, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. She married March 1916 Christopher Barker Symonds, born 1865 died 1934;

Lucy Elizabeth, born 28th November 1873, at 18 Regent Terrace, Gateshead, baptised 24th December 1873 at the Holy Trinity Church, Gateshead, she died 17th July 1922, at the Belverdere Nursing Home, Scarborough, Yorkshire North Riding. She married Edwin Emley, son of Thomas Emley, born 1870, died 1963, 22nd May 1902, at Gateshead;

Eleanor Caroline Alberta, was born at 18 Regent Terrace, Gateshead, on the 26th September 1876, baptised 15th October 1876, at the Holy Trinity Church, Gateshead, died 1st March 1913, at Oldham. She was married to William Taylor, born 1869, at Gateshead 14th February 1901. They resided at Ashcroft House, 19 Moor Street, Crompton, Lancashire, and prior to her death, she had been married 10 years and had 2 children;

Ethel Maud, born 8th September 1878, at 18 Regent Terrace, Gateshead, baptised 6th October 1878, Holy Trinity Church, Gateshead, died on the 20th August 1922 at Lynfield, Victoria Park, Manchester. She married Seville Taylor, born 1881, died 1971, 17th May 1908, at High Crompton, St Mary, Lancashire, they resided at 164 Oldham Road, Shaw, Crompton, Lancashire. They had no children in 1911;

Mary Isabella, born 7 Gladstone Terrace, Gateshead, 19th April 1882, baptised 17th May 1882, at the Holy Trinity Church, Gateshead, died 9th April 1958, at 6 Hawthorn Road, West Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. She married David Fulton Hardie, born 9th July 1879 died 1956, and was residing at 25 Saltwell View, Gateshead. [On September 28th 1939 they were residing at 6 Hawthorn Road, West Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. David F Hardie a Electrical/ Mechanical Engineer retired, wife Mary I Hardie, private means and a Ann Wear born 27th May 1903, a single servant were living at this address].

Anne [Annie] Constance, born 15th April 1884, at 7 Gladstone Terrace, Gateshead, baptised 15th April 1884, at the Holy Trinity Church Gateshead, died 13th February 1974, at Boundary Cottage, Kemerton, Worcestershire. She married Thomas Percival Galloway, born 12th November 1871, at Gateshead, died March 1943, at Northumberland North First, Northumberland in July 1905 at Gateshead. They had two children, a daughter Sylvia Galloway born April 1907, and a son Thomas Percival Adair Galloway, born October 1909 died 1987. Thomas Percival was a solicitor residing at 62 Manor House Road, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, in 1911. In 1939 they were residing at Glen View, Queens Road, Wooler, Glendale, Northumberland. Thomas P Galloway, a retired solicitor, wife Annie C Galloway, housewife, mother in law, Lucy Jane Tucker, [Thomas Taylor's mother], widow private means, Mary A Edwards born 11th September 1878 single cook, Elizabeth E Jewitt 17th April 1906, a single maid.

Florence Beatrice, born 27th February 1886 at 7 Gladstone Terrace, Gateshead, baptised 7th April 1886, Holy Trinity Church, Gateshead, died 23rd January 1977, North East Hampshire, Hampshire, England. She married in April 1910 at Gateshead, Frederic Percival Selwyn Thomas, son of Edwin and Hannah Thomas, born January 1880 died 15th December 1955, at Hendon, Middlesex. In 1939, Florence was residing at 20 Bewick Road, Gateshead.

Thomas Taylor Tucker, born 1880 the eldest son, baptised at the Holy Trinity Church, Gateshead, 7th April 1880. He was in the Tyne Electrical Engineers.

The Tucker family always lived in the central area of Gateshead. Stanley Dawson Simm Tucker was the grandson of Isaac Tucker (Isaac Tucker and Co. Turks Head Brewery Gateshead) who started life humbly living with his parents in Pipewellgate. At age of 17 Isaac was a soap maker but over the next 10 years he advanced himself becoming an innkeeper/brass founder.

By 1861 both his business and hence his accommodation improved. Isaac was now a brewer, malster and spirit merchant employing 7 men, so founding the famous Isaac Tucker Brewery. He lived at 66 High Street with his wife and family. He died in 1872 aged 48 at his home at 37 West Street Gateshead.

Isaac’s son Thomas took over the business. He resided with his wife Lucy Jane and his family at 4 Regent Terrace North. He died aged 42 in 1891 at his later home at 7 Gladstone Terrace Gateshead leaving his estate of £11,515 to his wife.

Stanley Dawson Simm Tucker was educated at Aldro Preparatory School near Godalming, Surrey, then the School House, Eastbourne College in September 1903, he left in April 1906. He played three-quarter for the XV for two seasons and was a corporal in the Officer Training Corps.

On the 1911 census he is shown as a farm student, he also studied in Australia. On the outbreak of war he was farming in Australia but returned to the UK 2nd January 1915 aboard Orsova, ship number 128278, from Brisbane. He obtained a commission in the 1/6th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers on the 5th February 1915, (late Cadet Lance-Corporal, from the Eastbourne College Contingent, Junior Division, Officers Training Corps).

The London Gazette 12th March 1915 shows his promotion to 2nd Lieutenant.

Although wounded twice during an attack at Houthulst Forest on the 26th October 1917, he continued to lead and cheer his men on until he fell, close to the enemy, this time mortally wounded. He was killed in action at Houthulst Forest Belgium in the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). His Commanding Officer wrote: We fought a hard fight but paid a heavy price, particularly in officers, who all led their men most gallantly. Your son in particular showed the utmost bravery, as I knew he would, having formed a very high opinion of him. He was very popular with his men and was always cheerful.

He never married. His will showed he left £9927 0s. 6d to his sister Martha and his brother in law.

The Tucker family grave is located in Gateshead East Cemetery.
