On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of Second Lieutenant Phillips Towler Read, serving with the 2nd Brigade Royal Field Artillery, who died 23/10/1916.

In Gateshead (Saltwell) Cemetery is a family headstone for Read which reads:

In loving memory
of
Phillips Towler Read
2nd Lieut. R.F.A.
who fell in the
Battle of the Somme
October 23rd 1916
Aged 33 years
Interred in France
Faithful unto death

Morpeth Herald 10/11/1916 carries a brief obituary:

Second-Lieut. Phil. T. Read, Catham, Elgy Road, Gosforth, has been killed in action. He was, prior to the war, head of the firm of G.E. Armond and Co., Gateshead.

Phillips Towler Read is remembered in Gateshead on G39.039
