In Gateshead East Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of:

2021 Driver
L.M. Annison
Royal Army Service Corps
19th November 1915 Age 24

This headstone must have been put up much later. The Army Service Corps did not have the prefix "Royal" until 1939-45

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

Lawrence Emmanuel was born in Sunderland 20th September 1892, the son of George Thomas and Eliza(nee Wall) Annison. Sometime after this the family moved to Gateshead. George Thomas died in 1900 and Eliza later that year married Thomas Milling.

In 1911 Lawrence was living with his mother Eliza and step father Thomas at 22 Claremont Street Gateshead. He was working as an apprentice fitter at the Ordnance works. In December 1914 he married Christiana (aka Chrissie) Jones.

After the outbreak of war in 1914 Lawrence enlisted and joined the Army Service Corps. He died in hospital on Wednesday 17 November 1915 aged 24 years and was interred in Gateshead East Cemetery the following Sunday.

A unknown and undated newspaper article describes his funeral. The cortege left the residence of his stepfather Thomas, 17a High West Street Gateshead. His officers, fellow soldiers and a number of former workmates from Elswick shipyard attended together with a large number of mourners. The Last Post was sounded.

Christiana was living at her parents' home Tosson Terrace Heaton c1920 with her daughter Christiana Annison, born 4th Quarter of 1915.

Lawrence is not on any Gateshead memorials but he is remembered at Sunderland in S140.048
