In Gateshead East Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 750554 Serjeant John George Nixon serving with the "E" Battery 1st Reserve Brigade Royal Field Artillery who died 22/04/1917.

The headstone reads:-

In loving memory of
Segt., John George, Nixon, R.F.A.
Dearly beloved husband of
May Nixon,
Who died at Ripon Military Hospital
April 22nd 1917, Aged 33 years.
