Sgt. McCarthy was serving with 83 Squadron. He was a crew member of Hampden I F1183 OL-E which took off from Scampton on a mission to Le Havre. The aircraft was shot down, killing all four crew. Sgt. McCarthy’s body was the only one not found, the others being washed ashore.
