On Ypres (Menin Gate) is the name of 3/10424 Lance Corporal Herbert Hornsby, serving with the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 09/08/1915.

In Gateshead (Saltwell) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

Son of Serjt. Maj. J. Hornsby (Ist Bn. King's Own Scottish Borderers); husband of Janet Hornsby, of 12, Gibbon St., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham.

The Herbert Hornsby (1878 - 1915) mentioned on this headstone would be my 2nd great uncle, brother to Captain & Quartermaster Joseph Hornsby (1868-1948).

Lance Corporal Herbert Hornsby (of the D.L.I.) was born in Fyzabad India, son to Sergeant Major Joseph Hornsby, service number 1/340 in the 25th (King's Own Scottish Borderers) Regiment of Foot and Martha Francis McDowell. He was married to Janet Johnstone Wells - daughter of John Thompson (1849 - 1920) and Margaret McClellen (1851 - 1935). He died in action 9th August 1915.

His body was never identified and he is remembered on panel 36 at the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belguim.

Herbert Hornsby is remembered in Bishop Auckland on B140.03 and B140.05
