The following has been submitted by a descendant:
John Robert Hindson was born on 23 September 1891 in Gateshead, the illegitimate first child of Esther Hindson. His grandmother, Margaret Hindson, played a large part in bringing him up, particularly when Esther subsequently married a Mr Burn and started a large family with him. John spent time with both households, in Gateshead and in Blackhill, Consett.
While working as a labourer/fireman at the Consett Iron Works, Consett, John enlisted in the Territorial Army in February 1913 as a Private, joining the 6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry.
On 16 February 1914 he was attested as a full-time, regular soldier with the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry.
Following training and the outbreak of war in August 1914, John was sent to France in September 1914, where he took part in a number of actions.
On the afternoon of 18 October 1914, in the vicinity of Ennetieres en Weppe, near Lille, he was grievously injured during an offensive action to test the strength of the German forces in Ennetieres.
With crippling gun shot injuries to both legs he was evacuated to England, arriving at the Royal Herbert Military Hospital in Woolwich on 20 October 1914.
He died at the Royal Herbert on 3 November 1914, aged 23 years, 'from wounds received in action'.
He is buried in Gateshead (Saltwell) Cemetery (Plot 4.4843), Gateshead, just a short distance from his childhood home.
His grandmother Margaret died in 1919 and was buried in the same grave. As a result, when standardised military gravestones were installed at Saltwell Cemetery in 1922, Margaret's name was inscribed below John's on his military gravestone, even though she was a civilan.
The age at death inscribed on John's gravestone is incorrect, and should read 23 years, not 22 years.

John Robert Hindson is remembered in D.L.I. Book of Remembrance page 304
