The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 11/11/1916 reports:
A Discharged Soldier’s Death.
Mr. Alfred Appleby inquired into the cause of the death of Harry Fanthorpe (34), Redheugh Road, Gateshead, who died at 12.30 on Thursday.
Evidence was given to the effect that deceased had been in the Army previous to the war. In October, 1914, he joined up again, and after serving in Egypt and France, he was discharged medically unfit, having been brought home wounded in July last. The wound, which was in the head, had never healed, and on two occasions he had taken small pieces of shrapnel shell from just below the wound. On the Saturday night previous, deceased became delirious with the pains in his head, and he was removed to the Infirmary.
Dr. Johnson, who made a post mortem examination, stated that he found two or three small pieces of shrapnel embedded in the scalp and a piece of bone was also found embedded in the brain. His opinion was that death was due to sceptic meningitis, consequent on the shrapnel wound received in action.
The jury returned a verdict accordingly.
