Drummond, S.F., Sgt., 1941

In Gateshead (Saltwell) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War grave with a private headstone of 954514 Sergeant (Wireless Op./Air Gunner) Simon Fullard Drummond serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 07/07/1941.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Drummond. of Gateshead.

The headstone reads:-

Treasured memories
Of our dearly loved son
Simon Fullard Drummond
Sergeant, W.Op. A.G., R.A.F.V.R.
Killed on active service July 7th 1941 aged 2?years
also George Turnbull Drummond
beloved husband of Ada died Feb. 27th 1946 aged 65 years
Also Ada dearly beloved wife of ?
died May 12th 1948 aged 59 years.

Sgt. Drummond was serving with 10 O.T.U. He was a crew member of Whitley V Z6487 which took off on a night navigation training exercise in moonlight conditions. The aircraft strayed from the designated track and crashed into a barrage balloon near Stratford on Avon and burst into flames. All the crew were killed.
