Richard Dellow the eldest son of Richard and Theresa Dellow 7 High West Street Gateshead was born in July 1894 at Gateshead. His family (including his father) were well known dentists in central Gateshead. Richard also went into dentistry as he is shown as a dental assistant on the 1911 census.
He had an active social life being a member of Holy Trinity choir, Gateshead Operatic Society and Saltwell Park Bowling Club.
Richard enlisted in 1914 and fought at the Somme for which he received a commission for gallantry in 1917. Unfortunately his long spells of service in the trenches eventually caused him to suffer from trench fever. This led to serious heart problems (ulcerative endocartitis, cerebral embolism) from which he died in 8th July 1919 aged 25 years. He died at The Dene Fernwood Road Jesmond Newcastle. He left £206 6s 6d to his father in his will.
Richard was buried with full military honours at Gateshead East Cemetery on 12 July 1919. His body was conveyed to his family grave on a gun carriage supplied by the R.F.A. His funeral was witnessed by huge crowds who gathered along the High Street to see his cortège go by.
Prior to the interment a memorial service was held in Holy Trinity Church and at the church as well as at the cemetery there was a large concourse of people. A party of 3rd Battalion Devons acted as under bearers and a firing party from that regiment under the command of 2nd Lieut. Hutchings was in attendance.
Newcastle Daily Chronicle 12/07/1919 reports his funeral which took place with full military honours. He was the son of Mr. Richard Dellow, dentist, of 7 High Street, Gateshead. He had been a member of Holy Trinity choir, and was connected to the Gateshead Operatic Society and the Saltwell Park Bowling Club.
Richard Dellow is remembered in Gateshead on G39.004 and G39.049 and in the Battalion History
