In Gateshead (Saltwell) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 18664 Corporal T.S. Cowley, serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 09/12/1916.

The headstone reads:

In loving memory of
Cpl. Thomas Smith, 12th D.L.I.
the dearly beloved son of
Thomas S. and Annie Cowley
who died at Smithston War Hospital,
Greenock, on Dec. 9th 1916,
from wounds received in action at Martinpuich
on Sept. 25th 1916, aged 24 years.
Annie Cowley Hains granddaughter
died Jan. 30th 1922 aged 4 years.
Also Thomas Smith
beloved husband of Annie Cowley
who died April 11th 1929 aged 73 years.
also Annie
beloved wife of the above
Thomas S. Cowley
died November 3rd 1943
aged 83 years.

Thomas Smith Cowley is remembered in Gateshead on G39.004 where his name is spelled “Couley” and in Bensham on B134.02 and B134.09
