E. Conway
Durham Light Infantry
1st October 1915 age 24.
Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:
Edward was the son of Peter, a general labourer, and Catherine (nee Snee). He was born in Gateshead 27 September 1891 and was baptised at St Josephs Church on 1 November. Edward was a glass worker.
His father, Peter is not shown on 1901 census as his mother, Catherine is head of the household. Catherine was a cigar maker when she was young and as she had a household of 7 youngsters to support she went back into the tobacco trade.
Edward married Bridget Riley on 22 November 1913. By 10 September 1914 he had enlisted into the army at Felling. He died 1 year and 22 days later of wounds received in action. He was shot in the arm and the leg.
His wife was present at his death at 10.00 am 1 October in St Thomas’ Military Hospital in London within only a few days of his being admitted there.
Bridget later received a widow’s pension of 15/- weekly for herself and child. She seems to have remarried as her name is quoted as Carr on later documentation.
Edward Conway is remembered at Gateshead on G39.082 and in the D.L.I. Book of Remembrance
