In Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arleux-en-Gohelle is the Commonwealth War Grave of 235841 Private Archie Caisley serving with the East Lancashire Regiment who died 13/10/1918.

In Gateshead East Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

aged 71 years.
Also Thomas, son of the above
who died Dec. 26th 1891
aged 15 years.
Also Archie
youngest son of the above
and beloved husband of Ethel Caisley
killed in action Oct. 13th 1918
aged 23 years
Interred in Military Cemetery
at Quiery-la-Motte, France.
Also Hannah
beloved wife of the above
Robert Caisley
who died May 27th 1920
aged 68 years.

Archie was born at Gateshead in 1895 to his parents Robert & Hannah (nee Pigg). The couple had 11 children but 3 died. His father was previously a colliery labourer but by 1911 he worked as a grocer/confectioner. He died in March 1918 only a few months before his youngest son was killed.

His siblings (as shown 1911 census) were Hannah (at home), Richard (glass beveller), Frank (varnish & polish warehouseman), James (apprentice colliery blacksmith) & Archie who, aged 15, was working as a bacon warehouseman.

Archie married Frances Ethel Tustin, in the summer of 1915.

He served with the 2nd Battalion East Lancashire Regiment (service no 235841) although he previously served as no 202641 with D.L.I.

He died in France in October 1918 and the CWGC shows his burial at Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arleux-en-Gohelle.

His wife remarried to become Mrs Harris.
