EIGHTON BANKS

Greenwood, T., A/Smn., 1919
John Taylor and Ann Norman have submitted the following:

The records show an Able Seaman Thomas Greenwood, but not a Petty Officer, which is how he is recorded on the memorial. He was born on 25th March 1897. He lived with his wife Sarah Annie at 2 Walkers Buildings, Eighton Banks.

He enlisted with 3rd Battalion, Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, number Z/2529, on January 2nd 1915 and was posted to Crystal Palace Depot, then Blandford and back to Crystal Palace before joining HMS Victory VI from May 1916 to February 1919. This was actually a shore establishment at Crystal Palace that carried the pay accounts for other units. He was demobbed on 24th February 1919. He died after demobilisation and his funeral took place at St Thomas, Eighton Banks on 30th September 1919.

He is remembered in Eighton Banks on E50.01 and E50.02 and on our List of Ships’ crews

There is no CWGC entry for Able Seaman Greenwood.
