Alexander was born in the second quarter of 1897 at Blaydon on Tyne, Co. Durham, the son of Janetta and the late Thomas of 53 Cuthbert Street, Blaydon. He also had a guardian, Mr Ormiston of 119 Cross Row, Addison Road, Blaydon.
He enlisted at Newcastle upon Tyne, initially with the 19th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, before being transferred to the 14th Battalion. Alexander was killed in action on 13 July 1916.
