Brinton, M.G., Staff Nurse, 1918

In Blaydon Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Staff Nurse May G. Brinton serving with the Territorial Force Nursing Service who died 30/10/1918.

The headstone reads:-

In loving memory of
Nursing Sister
May G. Brinton
who died at
1st Northern General Hospital
Newcastle upon Tyne
October 30th 1918
aged 25 years

Her duty nobly done

Also Frederick A. Brinton
father of the above
died March 22nd 1937
aged 73 years
Also Hannah his dear wife
died November 1st 1955 aged 93 years
Also of Charles Frederick
their son
died September 9th 1955
aged 59 years
Also Albert Cecil
their son
died March 28th 1965
aged 72 years

The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 05/11/1918 reports:-

The funeral took place of Sister Brinton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Brinton, Blaydon House, Blaydon, who died from pueumonia at the 1st Northern General Hospital, Newcastle, with military honours in Blaydon Cemetery. A service was conducted in the Parish Church by the Rev. F.. V. Simkinson, Rector. The Blaydon Salvation Army Band played the Dead March." A large number of sisters from the 1st Northern General Hospital and the Union Infirmary attended. The members of the Stella Coal Co.'s Corps of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, under Corps Superintendent Batey; nursing sisters, and members of the Blaydon Nursing Division were also, present. the floral tributes included a wreath from the committee of the Blaydon Welcome Home and Reception Fund.
