Sgt. Young was killed when Supermarine Spitfire IX PT490 of 601 Squadron was lost on a mission to bomb a target near Rimini. The Squadron's Operational Record Book (O.R.B.) records:
Six aircraft took off at 11.55 hours to attack a strong point 2 miles south of RIMINI. The results of the six 500lb bombs release being, four within 100 yards and two wide. The area was also straffed. The pilots met intense light ack-ack from the area. 1673234 SGT. YOUNG M (Pilot) in Spitfire IXB P.T.490 was seen to go into his bombing dive and bomb the target. After the attack this pilot failed to form up with his formation and on failing to return to base was reported “Missing Particulars Unknown.”
