Sgt. Wood was killed when Bristol Blenheim IV Z5953 QY-D of 254 Sqn was lost on a patrol from R.A.F. Sumburgh. The Blenheim was shot down by a Messerschmitt Bf-110 and crashed into the North Sea some 15 miles south west of Bergen, with the loss of all three crew members.
