The death of Mr. Arthur Mears, which took place on Thursday at the age of 28 years, cast quite a gloom over the village. When the war broke out he was one of the first to volunteer, and enlisting in November, 1914,saw service in France and other parts. He was seriously wounded and shell shocked, and as a result was discharged in March, 1918. In December 1918 he married Miss L. Irene Rigby, head mistress at the C.E. Infant School. In March this year he had a seizure, as a result of which for a good while he lost his speech. A fortnight ago he contracted pneumonia and passed away as stated. The interment took place on Sunday, and was one of the largest funerals seen in the village. The Church Choir attended and sang special hymns. The Vicar took the service in the church, and at the graveside the discharged soldiers and sailors were in attendance, and Lieut. Cail of Willington, sounded the Last Post. The cadets of the Church Lads’ Brigade, under the command of Instructor John Bell, and the Rechabite Tent also attended.
