Sgt. Collingwood was serving with 19 OTU B Flight. He was a member of a crew of a Whitley V EB 387 which took off from Kinloss for a cross-country training exercise. The weather worsened and a general recall message was issued. The Whitley received a “green” signal from the airfield controller, but flew into woods at Woodhead Farm, killing all the crew.
