The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 11/02/1916 reports:

Distinguished Conduct Medal.
Presented to Sergt.-Major Bousfield at Crook.

Last evening, Sergt.-Major Bousfield, of the 9th Durhams, was publicly presented at Crook with the Distinguished Conduct Medal, which he gained for meritorious conduct in April last when half the company. comprising 47 non-commissioned officers, were under heavy shell and machine gun fire at the second battle of Ypres. He got the men into a place of safety, his conduct being described as cool, courageous and remarkably resourceful. Coun. W. Pallister presided, and said Sergt.- Major Bousfield, although a new arrival in Crook, had proved himself a fine Briton.

Mr. Herbert Greener, chief agent of Pease and Partners, presented Bousfield with the medal and a gold hunter subscribed for by friends in the district.

Father Hayes said that Bousfield had not only done honour to Crook, but had kept alive the best traditions if the "Faithful Durhams".

Replying amidst ringing cheers, Sergt.-Major Bousfield said that he had simply done his duty, and that was what a soldier always expected to do.

A capital concert also took place, at which the contributors included Lieut. Pallister, Sergt. Scott, Mr. Bob Winter, humorist, and others.
