In St James churchyard is the headstone of KP/584 Petty Officer William Henry Cartwright. Hawke Battalion R.N.D.

Coroner's Report No. 368 dated 28th August 1918.

"William Henry Cartwright, 26 years, Petty Officer, K.O. 584 [sic] Home address 11 West Road, Bishop Auckland. Died in 1st Northern General Hospital at 1.20am on 28th August 1918.

After enquiries Coroner granted a Certificate. No inquest necessary, injured at seat of War."

He is remembered at Coundon on C117.04 and at Leasingthorne on L72.01
