In Sunderland Bridge Cemetery is a wooden cross which reads:-

W. Hallam
18th D.L.I. 523

William Hallam joined the Durham Light Infantry with Service Number 523. He entered a theatre of war 23rd December 1915. He later transferred to the Labour Corps with Service Number 638830.

Recipient of the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

In 1939 William born 23rd October 1881 was living at 130 Wood View, Croxdale Colliery with his wife Elizabeth, married daughter Muriel Brown born 1909 and grandson Kenneth Brown born 1938. William was a Coal Miner Stoneman.

William died in late 1965.
