In St.Mary’s Churchyard is a family headstone which reads:

Robert Ernest
the beloved son of
Christopher Walker and Mary Carlin
of Bowburn Colliery
who died June 25 1909
aged 13 years
Safe in the arms of Jesus
Also of their son
Christopher Walker Carlin
who fell in action in France
31 July 1915 aged 23 years
Also of the above
Christopher Walker Carlin
who died 24th October 1920
aged 62 years
Christopher resided in Stevenson Street, Bowburn and worked as a putter in a local coal mine. He embarked for France on 21st May 1915 and was killed in action on 31 July 1915 at Ypres.
