Dixon, J., Sgt., 1943
In Shildon (St John) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1526486 Sergeant John Dixon, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 01/06/1943.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

Sgt. Dixon was killed when Vickers Wellington XI MP597 of 3 O.A.D.U. (Overseas Air Delivery Unit) flew into high ground shortly after take-off for North Africa. The Wellington had left R.A.F. Boscombe Down, but crashed in fog on Dartmoor. Of the five crew, Sgt. Dixon was killed and the other four injured.

He is remembered in Shildon on S122.02 and S122.05 and in Bishop Auckland on B140.01
