William was born in Shotley Bridge in the summer of 1887.He was the third child of Thomas Armstrong, a miner, born in Billingside (under Pontop Pike), and Elizabeth, from Bothel in Cumberland. He had two older sisters, Annie and Jane, and ayounger brother and sister, George and Mabel.
In 1901, the family were living at 24 Snows Green Road. By 1905, they had moved to 8 Summerhill. William was then working as a grocer’s assistant.
William enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers and became a Corporal. He was killed in action in France on the 28th March 1918 and is commemorated at the Pozieres Memorial
The Blaydon Courier 02/04/1921 carries:
In loving memory of our dear son, Corporal Willie Armstrong, of Shotley Bridge, 19th N.F., killed in action 28th March 1918. Ever and brother.
