William was born on the 8th August 1881 in Shotley Bridge and was baptised in the Primitive Methodist Chapel there on the 22nd November 1881. He was the second son of Frederick and Margaret Ann Turner. Frederick Turner was born in Ashen in Essex. Margaret Ann was from Shotley Bridge. William had an older brother, John and two younger sisters, Kathelina and Elizabeth.
In 1891, the family were living at 9 Kepier Terrace in Gilesgate, Durham. Frederick was working as a furniture dealer’s agent.
By 1901, Frederick and Margaret had moved to 34 Durham Road, Blackhill. William, aged nineteen, was at St Andrew’s Military Barracks in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
On the 12th March 1902, he signed on for service in the navy. This was a twelve-year service agreement which he later cancelled by purchase.
In the summer of 1908, William married Angelina Foreman from Crookhall. In 1911, they were living at 6 Ritsons Road. William was employed as a picture framer. Their son, Frederick Foreman Turner was born on the 14th September 1915.
William enlisted in the Yorkshire Hussars. At the time of his enlistment he was 5’ 5½’’ tall. He had dark hair, grey eyes and a fair complexion. He served as a Lance Corporal in France and died there on the 11th April 1918. He is remembered at the Ploegsteert Memorial.
In 1939, Angelina Turner and her son Frederick were living at 3 King’s Road, Blackhill. Frederick was Assistant Secretary of a building society. Angelina died in 1962.
William’s sister, Kathelina, married John Harrison Thompson in 1905. In 1911, they were living at 11 North View, Blackhill.
