Turnbull, W.S., L/Cpl., 1917
On the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France is the name of 22/684 Lance Corporal William Stobbs Turnbull serving with the 22nd (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 05/06/1917.

Son of Simon and Emily Turnbull, of Lupton House, Oakwood Rd., Blackhill, Co. Durham.

William was born in Blackhill in the early spring of 1888. His father was Simon Turnbull, a steel smelter, born in Consett. His mother was Emily, née Stobbs, from Blackhill. William was the third of nine children in his family. His siblings were George Alfred, John Sanderson, Elizabeth Annie, Simon, Hannah Maria, Emily, Sidney and Lily. In 1891 and 1901 the family home was 31 Roger Street.

By 1911, they had moved to 48 Oakwood Road. William was a stock taker in the steel works.

William served in France with the Northumberland Fusiliers.Northumberland Fusiliers

He died on the 5th June 1917 and is remembered at the Arras Memorial, Pas-de-Calais.

William Stobbs Turnbull is remembered at Blackhill on B145.12 and at Shotley Bridge on S27.03
