In Level Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 24382 Private Tom Hall, serving with the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) who died 14/06/1917.

Dorothy Hall and Paul Heatherington have submitted the following:-

Tom Hall was born 28th July 1896 at Baxton Burn, Shotley Bridge. and was baptised in the Primitive Methodist Chapel in Shotley Bridge a month later, on the 23rd August. He was the sixth child of Joseph Hall, a coal miner born in Benfieldside, and Maria Kirkpatrick, from Lochmaben in Scotland. Tom had four older brothers – William, James, Samuel and Richard – and three sisters – Catherine, Jane and Mabel. Tom grew up in Shotley Bridge, at 34 Cutlers Hall Road.

Tom enlisted in Consett on the 21st October 1914. On his enrolment form he stated that he was 19 years old. He was just 18. He was working as a farmer. He was 5’ 8’’ tall and weighed just nine and a half stone. He had blue eyes and light brown hair.

Tom joined the 12th DLI with Service Number 20937. In June 1916 he was transferred to the 13th DLI. He was wounded in 1916 and on return to the Western Front in October 1916 he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington’s West Ridings Regiment No 24382.

Tom was killed on Thursday 14th June 1917, six weeks before his 21st birthday. He is buried at Level Crossing Cemetery Fampoux, Pas De Calais, France.

The other Hall brothers William, Sam, Richard and James all survived the War.

Tom is the Great Uncle of NEWMP’s late Treasurer Alan Hall and the above photos are from the family archives.
