Joseph Henry Swinburne

On the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, is the name of 14161 Joseph Henry Swinburne serving with the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards who died 05/09/1917.

Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Swinburne, of 80, Benfieldside, Blackhill, Co. Durham.

Joseph was born in 1884 to John and Ann Swinburne. John was born in Hexham in 1843 and Ann (Annie) in Ulgham,Northumberland, in 1844. Joseph was the youngest child in a family of seven. His older siblings were Mary Jane (died 1876), Francis, Florence, John, William and Elizabeth.John and Annie were already living in Benfieldside by 1871 (at 24 Benfieldside Edge). John died in 1893 and Annie in 1897.

In 1911, the rest of the family were living at 80 Benfieldside Road and Joseph was a ‘boarder’ at his sister’s home, 23 Benfieldside Road.

Joseph enlisted at Consett on the 15th December 1914. He was 5’ 9’’ tall, had blue eyes and brown hair. He worked as a coal miner.

Joseph served as a private in the Coldstream Guards. He died at the age of thirty-three years, in France, on the 5th September 1917. He is remembered at the Tyne Cot memorial.
