SHOTLEY BRIDGE

Routledge, I.A., Pte., 1918
In Pernes British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, is the Commonwealth war Grave of 14677 Private Isaac Alexander Routledge serving with the "C" Company 6th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment who died 25/06/1918.

Son of William and Elizabeth Routledge, of Blackhill, Co. Durham.

Isaac was born in Middlesbrough in the summer of 1896. His father was John William Routledge, his mother Elizabeth (nee Bell). Both his parents were born in Shotley Bridge. They were married on the 17th September 1881. Isaac was one of eleven children. His siblings were named Mary Elizabeth, John Thomas, Isabella, Robert William, Herbert, John William, James, Thirwell, Cuthbert and Elsdon. John William Routledge was a miner.

The family clearly moved around the north-east, following employment and variously lived in Blackhill, Jarrow, Middlesbrough, Benwell and Leadgate. In 1891, they were at 27 Benfieldside Road, in 1901 in Benwell, in 1911 at Chopwell

Isaac enlisted in Sunderland on the 7th November 1914. He was aged nineteen years and one month, was employed as a miner and was then living at East Street, Easington Colliery. He was 5’ 4˝’’ tall, weighed nine stone and had a chest measurement of 34˝ inches. He had grey eyes, brownhair and a fresh complexion.

Isaac served as a Private in the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was posted to the Dardanelles and then transferred to France. He died of wounds on the 25th June 1918, at the age of 21 years. He is buried at Pernes British Cemetery.

At the time of his death, his parents were living at 42 Cutlers Hall Road.

Isaac’s older brother, John Thomas Routledgealso died in the war in 1918.
