In Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, Seine-Maritime, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 102136 Sapper Phillip Jackson Newton serving with the 182nd Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers who died 27/09/1918.

Gone but not forgotten

Husband of Eliza Gibson Newton, of 14, Elm Park Terrace, Shotley Bridge, Co. Durham.

Phillip was born in Gateshead in the spring of 1877. His father – also Phillip Jackson Newton – was born in Hesket, Cumberland. His mother, Mary (nee Mingins) was born in Sacriston, Durham. They married in Carlisle in 1871. Phillip had an older sister, Margaret, and a younger sister, Mary.In 1881, the family were living at 3 Slacks Court, Caldewgate, Carlisle. Phillip’s father was a labourer.

By 1891, the family had moved to Francis Street, Westoe. Phillip’s father was now working as a platelayer for the North East Railway. Phillip himself, at just thirteen, was employed as an apprentice moulder.

In 1901, they were at Southwick Junction, where both Phillip and his father were now employed by the North East Railway.

In 1909, Phillip married Eliza Gibson (nee Godfrey), from Southwick, in Sunderland. Their daughter, Mary, was born on the 28th February 1911. They were living at High Friarside,Burnopfield, where Phillip was working as a miner. Their son, Phillip Jackson, was born on the 24th October 1913.

Phillip enlisted in June 1915 and joined the Royal Engineers. At this time, the family were living in Hamsterley and Phillip gave his occupation as ‘miner’. He was 5’ 11’’ tall with a chestmeasurement of 36 inches.

During the war, Eliza and the children moved to 14 Elm Park Terrace, Shotley Bridge. A second son, William Henry, was born on the 20th February 1917.

Phillip served with the Royal Engineers as a tunneller. He died of wounds received on the 27th September 1918 at 2 GER Hospital in France and was buried in the Ste Marie Cemetery in Le Havre.

Eliza remarried in 1920.
