SHOTLEY BRIDGE

Nattrass, R.S., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme is the name of 22/93 Private Robert Storey Nattrass serving with the 22nd (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Son of Mrs. Mary Maria Nattrass, of 73, Oakwood Rd., Blackhill, Co. Durham.

Paul Heatherington has submitted the following:-

Robert was born in Alston in the spring of 1879. His father, William, had been born in Allendale. His mother, Mary Maria, was born in Bewcastle. Robert was the fourth child in his family. His older sister and brothers were Margaret Ann, John Joseph and Thomas William; his younger siblings were George Edward, Charles Nicholson, Mary Maria, Elizabeth Jane, Henry Hodgson and James Albert. The family lived in Alston and moved to the Consett area in about 1892.Robert’s father was employed as a shepherd (1881), an insurance agent (1891) and a coal miner (1901 and 1911).

In 1901, the family were living at Allendale Cottages, Medomsley. Robert and his brothers were working as coal miners.

By 1911, they had moved to 73 Oakwood Road, Blackhill, and were still employed as miners.

Robert enlisted as a Private in the Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on the 1st July 1916 and is commemorated at the Thiepval Memorial, Somme.

Robert’s younger brother, James Albert, served during the war with the Northumberland Fusiliers. His nephew, John William, also served with the Royal Field Artillery, Northumbrian Brigade.
