On Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 21602 Private Sydney Charlesworth Mitchell serving with the "C" Company 7th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment who died 22/03/1918.

Son of Jonathan and Ellen Ann Mitchell, of Shotley Cottage, Shotley Bridge, Co. Durham.

In Benfieldside Cemetery is a family kerbstone for Mitchell which includes:

Sydney Mitchell, son, killed in action March 22nd 1918 aged 19 years.

Sidney was born in Blackhill in the summer of 1898. Sidney’s first home was at 8 St Cuthbert’s Avenue. His father, Jonathan, born in Keighley, West Yorkshire, was manager of the flour mill. His mother, Ellen Ann was born in Honley, also in West Yorkshire. Sidney’s three older sisters, Mary, Alice and Margaret, were all born in Leeds. The family moved to the Consett area in about 1898. Sidney’s sister, Alice, died in 1905.

In 1911, the family were living at 31 Snows Green Road.

Sydney enlisted in Newcastle-upon-Tyne as a Private in the Bedfordshire Regiment and just nineteen years old when he was killed in action in France on the 22nd March 1918.1918. He is commemorated at the Pozieres Memorial.

Sydney Cahrlesworth Mitchell is remembered at Consett on C101.13 and at Shotley Bridge on S27.01 and S27.03
