Mitchell, J.W., Pte., 1915
On the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France, is the name of 16218 Private James William Mitchell serving with the 7th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers who died 26/09/1915.

Son of Mrs. Ada J. Mitchell, of 22, John St., Blackhill, Co. Durham.

Paul Heatherington has submitted the following:-

James was a native of Blackhill, born there in 1895. He was a son of John James Mitchell, a miner, born in Hexham, and Ada Jane Mitchell (née Douglass), born in Sunderland. He was the second child in his family and his siblings were Eva, Lily, Maggie, Isabel and Thomas.

In 1901, the family were living at 41 Benfieldside Road and in 1911 at 22 Benfieldside Road. By this time, James was also working as a miner.

James enlisted as a Private in the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on the 26th September 1915, at the age of just nineteen years. He is commemorated at the Loos Memorial.

James William Mitchell is remembered at Shotley Bridge on S27.01 and S27.03
