SHOTLEY BRIDGE

Johnson, C., Pte., 1916
In Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm), West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 6/5068 Private Charles Johnson serving with the 6th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 23/03/1916.

Paul Heatherington has submitted the following:-

Charles was born in Winlaton, towards the end of 1877. His father, also named Charles, was a hawker, born in Warkworth, Northumberland. His mother, Elizabeth, nee Kelly, was from Rochester in Northumberland. They married in 1862. Charles was the fourth child in his family. His siblings were named Mary, Ann, Mabel, Elizabeth, Grace, William, Hannah, Mary and James.

In 1871, before the birth of Charles, the family were living in Church Road, Winlaton. In 1901, they lived at North Street, Winlaton.

Charles married Mary Ann Steele in the summer of 1900. They lived for a time with his parents. Their daughter, Norah Victoria, was born in December 1906.

By 1911, they were living at 4 Messenger Bank, Shotley Bridge. Charles was then working as a mason’s labourer.

During World War 1 Charles served as a Private in the Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action in Belgium on the 23rd March 1916 and is buried at Railway Dugouts Burial Ground in West Flanders.
