Son of Thomas N. and Mary Hull, of 87, Benfieldside Rd., Blackhill, Co. Durham.

Paul Heatherington has submitted the following:-

Frank was born at 69 Benfieldside Road in the summer of 1895. His father was Thomas Nattrass Hull, born in Allendale in Northumberland, and his mother Mary Hull, née Heslop, born in Benfieldside. They were married in the spring of 1894.Frank was the first child in his family. His younger siblings were Esther May, Wilfrid Robson and Maude Isabel. In 1901, the family was still resident at 69 Benfieldside Road. Thomas was working as a railway carter.

By 1911, they had moved to 87 Benfieldside Road and Thomas was a butcher. Frank, at fifteen, was working as a clerk in the Consett Iron Company. He was later employed in the Flour Mill in Shotley Bridge, before enlisting.

Frank enlisted as a Private in the Northumberland Hussars but later transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers. Frank was wounded and when he was convalescing, he wrote many letters home on the letterhead provided by the Soldiers’ Christian Association.

Frank died of pneumonia at the Edinburgh War Hospital on the 16th April 1918, aged twenty-two years. He isburied in Blackhill Cemetery.

Frank Heslop Hull is remembered at Blackhill on B145.11 at Consett on C101.13 and at Shotley Bridge on S27.01 and S27.03
