Howarth, C., Pte., 1918
On the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 250320 Private Charles Howarth serving with the 1st/6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 29/03/1918.

Paul Heatherington has submitted the following:-

Charles was born in Tow Law, towards the end of 1895. His father was John William Howarth, born in Salford. His mother, Elizabeth Ann Wear, was from Blackhill. They married in 1885.Charles was the fifth child in his family. His siblings were named Frederick, Phoebe, John, Harry and Archibold.

In about 1900, the family moved from Tow Law to Blackhill. In 1901, they lived at 16 Backstone Burn and his father’s occupation was now ‘shoemaker’.

By 1911, they had moved to 32 Wood Street in Shotley Bridge. His father was now working as a house painter and Charles as a grocer’s errand boy.

During World War 1 Charles served as a Private in the 1st/6th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. Charles was just twenty-two years old when he was killed in action on the 29th March 1918.

Charles Howarth is remembered at Consett on C101.03 and at Shotley Bridge on S27.01 and S27.03
