Thomas was born Thomas Dale in the early months of 1888 at Sandhoe, Northumberland. He was the third child in a family of eight children. His father was William Henderson from Acomb. His mother was Mary Ann Dale, a dressmaker. William and Mary Ann married in St Mary’s, Hexham, on the 31st December 1892.
In 1891, the family were living at Bridge End Cottage, Sandhoe. In 1901 they were in the village of Acomb. William Henderson was a lead miner. By 1904, the family had moved to Consett and were living at 36 Green Street. William Henderson and three of his sons were now coal miners.
In 1908, Thomas married Blanche Thompson from Shotley Bridge. Their children, Mary Isabella and John Thomas were born in 1910 and 1912 respectively.
In 1911, the family were living at 41 Wood Street, Shotley Bridge, and Thomas was working as a motor man in the flour mill.
Thomas enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry and achieved the rank of Lance Corporal. He was killed in action in France on the 1st July 1916 and is commemorated at the Thiepval Memorial.
