SHOTLEY BRIDGE

Hall, L.J.J., Pte., 1918
On the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, France, is the name of G/4486 Private Lindsay John Jesse Hall serving with the 1st/7th Battalion Middlesex Regiment who died 31/08/1918.

The son of Jesse and Sarah Hall, of 54, Durham Rd., Blackhill, Co. Durham.

Lindsay was born early in 1897 in Blackhill and was baptised on the 24th March 1897 at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Shotley Bridge. His father was local man Jesse Hall, a grocer, and his mother was Sarah Jane (Sadie) Hall (née Robson) from Medomsley. Lindsay had an older sister, Vera, and a younger sister, Mona.

In 1901, the family were living at 22 Belle Vue Terrace in Blackhill. Jesse was working as a grocery manager.

In 1911, when Lindsay was still at school, the family were living at 54 Durham Road and Jesse was a manager at the Co-operative Store.

Lindsay served initially with the 3rd Durham Light Infantry (31394), then in the London Regiment (45341) and as a Private in the Duke of Cambridge’s Own Regiment. He was killed in action at Bullicourt on the 31st August 1918 at the age of twenty-one.

Lindsay John Jesse Hall is remembered at Consett on C101.13 and at Shotley Bridge on S27.03
