SHOTLEY BRIDGE

Gibson, J.W., Pte., 1918
On the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, France, is the name of 235564 Private Joseph William Gibson serving with the 2nd/4th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment who died 28/09/1918.

Son of Joseph William and Amelia Florence Gibson, of 5, Railway Cottages, Lintz Green, Rowlands Gill, Co. Durham.

Joseph was born in Shotley Bridge in 1899. He was the fourth child of Joseph William Gibson, born in Shotley Bridge, and Amelia Florence (known as Florence, née Seed) born at Shotley Grove. His siblings were John, Lily, Bella and Frances. Joseph’s father had grown up in Wood Street, Shotley Bridge, and at the age of thirteen, in 1881, was already working as a miner.

In 1901, the family lived at 21 Benfieldside Road. In 1911 they lived at 20 Summerhill. Joseph, aged thirteen, was still at school. His father was working in the coke yard at the iron works.

Joseph enlisted as a Private in the York and Lancaster Regiment on the 22nd March 1917. At that time, he was just 5’ 3’’ tall with a chest measurement of 32’’. He was a platform porter with the North East Railway. It was noted that he was a Methodist.

Joseph was just nineteen years old when he died in France on the 28th September 1918.
