George Fox

On Ypres(Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, is the name of 2440 Private George Fox serving with "D" Company 1st/6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 26/04/1915.

Son of James and Dorothy Fox, of 52, Front St., Shotley Bridge, Co. Durham.

George was born in Shotley Bridge in 1884 and was baptised on the 8th December 1884 at Shotley Bridge Primitive Methodist Chapel. His father was James Fox, a flour mill labourer who was born in Essex. His mother was Dorothy (née Young) from Benton in Northumberland. George was thesecond child in a family of seven. His siblings were named Marion, Thomas, Charles, Dorothy, Alfred and Emma Jane.

George grew up in Shotley Bridge. In 1891 the family were living at 30 Wood Street. By 1901, George was working as a labourer in the paper mill and the family lived at 45 Wood Street.

In 1911, they were all, except sister Marion, still sharing a home at 52 Front Street and George was an iron worker.

George enlisted as a Private in the 1st/6th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. He was killed in action on the 26th April 1915.

The Newcastle Journal 13/08/1917 reports:-

Out of eleven playing members of Shotley Bridge Cricket Club who joined the colours ten have made the supreme sacrifice. The number includes 2nd Lieut. George Shorter, 2nd Lieut. A. Hickford, Sgt Sydney Moore and his brother (Pte. Tom Moore) L.Cpl L. Tweddell and Pte. Geo Fox.

George Fox is remembered at Consett on C101.03 and at Shotley Bridge on S27.01 and S27.03
