William Dinning

In Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 13351 Lance Corporal William Dinning serving with the 12th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 09/07/1916.

Paul Heatherington has submitted the following:-

William was born in the spring of 1889 in Medomsley. He was a son of John Dinning, a miner from Allendale, and Evelina, who came from Norfolk. He was one of five boys in his family and had four sisters.

William became a miner. In 1911, the family were living at Low Westwood.

On the 28th August 1912, William married Sarah Wilkes at Medomsley Church. Their first daughter, Evelina, was born on the 12th June 1914.

On the 5th September in the same year William went to Newcastle to enlist in the army. At the time of his enlistment, William was just 5’ 4’’ tall, weighed just over 8 stone. His chest measurement was 34’’. He had a sallow complexion, grey eyes and brown hair.

The family were living at 34 Snows Green Road. A second daughter, Alice, was born on the 30th March 1916. Three months later, on the 9th July 1916, William was wounded in battle and died at the 38th Casualty Clearing Station.

A memorial service was held at Low Westwood Church.

William Dinning is remembered at Hamsterley Colliery on H140.04, at Medomsley on M36.01 and at Shotley Bridge on S27.01 and S27.03
