Archer, J.J., Cpl., 1918
In Bermerain Communal Cemetery, Nord, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 235546 Corporal John Joseph Archer serving with the 9th (Northumberland Hussars) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 24/10/1918.

Son of Elizabeth Jane Lough, of 6, St. Andrew's Crescent, Blackhill, Co. Durham. Native of Stanhope, Co. Durham.

Paul Heatherington has submitted the following:-

John was born in Stanhope in the early months of 1893 and was baptised in Stanhope on the 15th October of the same year. His mother, Elizabeth Jane Archer, was unmarried at the time of his birth. In 1891, she had been employed as a domestic servant at The Pack Horse Inn in Stanhope.

John was brought up at Crawleyside by his grandparents, John Archer, a limestone quarryman, and his wife, Mary Jane Archer. John’s grandfather died when he was four years old.In 1899, Elizabeth Jane Archer married Robert William Lough (known as William). In 1901 they were living at Crooked Oak. By 1911, they were living at 31 John Street, Blackhill. John’s whereabouts at this time are not known.

John Joseph enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers at Newcastle upon Tyne and became a Corporal. He died in France on the 24th October 1918 at the age of twenty-five years. At the time of his death, his mother was living at 6 St Andrew’s Crescent.
