In Ovillers Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 21/562 Private William Pinkerton, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

He was a putter in South Pontop Colliery before he joined up.

R. Thomas has submitted the following:

Private William Pinkerton, service number 21/562, served with Northumberland Fusiliers – 21st Tyneside Scottish Battalion. He lived at 28 Lime Street, South Moor, the beloved son of Henry and Rachel. He was killed 01/07/1916 (on Somme) aged 21. He was buried at Ovillers, France, grave no. IV A 9. Please use information appropriately so he will always be remembered for his sacrifice.

William Pinkerton is remembered in Greencroft on G54.02 page 32, and in South Moor on S129.01 and S129.02
