Memorial Service

In Boulogne Eastern Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 20430 Corporal Samuel Ward, serving with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers who died 02/08/1917.

The following has been supplied by Mark Carroll, his great-grandson:

Samuel Ward. Born 5 December 1892, Willington, Crook. Son of Jane (nee Kasher) & the late George Henry Robinson Ward, 24 Poplar Street, South Moor. Husband of Emily Ward (nee Bray), 16b Maple Street, South Moor, Co Durham. Colliery Bricklayer. Father of six. He died as a result of mustard gas poisoning and is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

There was a Memorial Service held at St George’s Church, South Moor on 14th October 1917, at 10.30am in his memory.

He is remembered on both War Memorials at South Moor (St George's Church & South Moor Park Memorial) S129.01 and S129.02 and the Social Workmen’s Club S129.03

He is also named on family headstones in St George’s Churchyard, South Moor & Stanley Cemetery, Co Durham
