Calvert, T., Pte., 1919
On the Delhi Memorial, India is the name of M2/121135 Private Thomas Calvert serving with the Royal Army Service Corps who died 03/10/1919.

Thomas Calvert was born 1881 in Houghton, County Durham, one of 9 children born to George Calvert 1852 Northallerton, Yorkshire and Elizabeth his wife born 1854 in Barnsley, Yorkshire. By 1891 they were married with 4 children and were living at Double Row, Penshaw, George was employed as a miner, 1911 they were living in Craghead at 36 William Street, George was working as a coal hewer, Thomas now 19 was a blacksmith’s apprentice at the coal mine.

Thomas Calvert enlisted in Durham, September 14th 1915 and was assigned as Private M2/121135 Royal Army Service Corps. He remained in England until May 6th 1916 when he was embarked at Devonport bound for India, disembarking in Karachi one month later. Thomas was assigned to the 693rd Mechanical Transport Company part of the Lines of Communication and was not under the orders of any Division but was attached to the heavy artillery as Ammunition Columns, Omnibus Companies, Motor Ambulance Convoys or Bridging and Pontoon units. His military record is sparse simply listing that in December 1918 he was stationed in Rawalpindi. July 2nd 1919 he was admitted to hospital and in the following months transferred to three others eventually being admitted to the Station Hospital in Kohat on October 3rd 1919.

Two days later Private MT/121135 Thomas Calvert R. A. S. C. died of pneumonia October 5th 1919. He was buried the same day in Kohat Cemetery, Bengal, grave 1 87 to the north west of the River Indus where maintenance was not possible, His name along with a further 1,000 burials was included on the Delhi Memorial, India Gate, Face 23, which commemorate those who died and have no known grave. Thomas Calvert was 27 years old and single.

His father received all monies due to him and his awards of the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
