Edward James was the son of Abraham and Hannah Barber and was born in 1863 at Aylsham in Norfolk. In 1901 the family were living at Holmside. Edward was a colliery labourer.

Edward enlisted 14th August 1914 and joined the Royal Field Artillery (90614) sometime late he was transferred to the Labour Corps (338668). He was discharged 10th April 1918. Edward Barber died aged 59 years, on the 21st April 1921.

He is not remembered on a local War Memorial.
